An Interview With Auction For The Promise Club

Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut EP 'One' back in 2012, Auction For The Promise Club have had their sights set high and rightly so. The Cornwall three piece have sent their sound to the stages of The Great Escape, Bestival, Boardmasters, Y Not, Lodestar, Leopallooza and even the opening day of the 2012's Olympic Ceremony. The latest track to come from the band 'This May Hurt'; brims with power, enthusiasm and that female-fronted indie rock and roll that over here at The Antidote, we can't get enough of.

Here's a chat we had with AFTPC...

Hey Auction For The Promise Club! That’s a interesting name you have there. Can you tell us where it came from? What’s a Promise Club and how do we auction for one?

Ha! It's a long story and we wouldn't want to bored you with it :-) In fact its highly top secret, it's like the Coca Cola recipe, we can't all fly on the same plane incase it crashes and we all die and no one will be left to bored people with the story when we are old and smelly.

Word on the grapevine is that there’s a video on it’s way to accompany your new single ‘This May Hurt’ (which we’ve shared below) - can you tell us a little bit about it?

It was made by the lovely Adam Taylor. He is a divine gentleman from America that lives in Falmouth and does illustration and animation. The video has a little Sharman Crow that has obstacles to over come on his/her determined quest to reach their goal! Its fun :-)

So you were chosen to perform at the 2012 Olympic ceremony - what an achievement! how did that come about?

It was't the actual opening ceremony, it was the opening day. A company called Emerging Icons had been helping us and a few other bands, people with a really love for music and good times!
What was it like to be a part of such a monumental event and to perform in front of such a huge crowd? Its was great! Such and exciting atmosphere, they had a stage set up in the Olympic park that looked sort of like a Sharks mouth, which was designed by some famous architect have brilliant acoustics, amazing.

What music have you got on repeat at the moment? Any recommendations?

Corrrr loads - The Black Tamborines, Flashes, Thnk Tnk, Moriaty etc, all from the SW!

For our readers that are unfamiliar with your work, how would describe your music?
Lively gigs, rocky but with atmospheric bits too, female singer.

Which is your favourite track to play live and why?

The new single because its like a Knome, short and sweet.

So many live music venues in London have shut down recently and I think we speak for everyone when we say that it sucks! What are your thoughts on this? Do you have any advice for us helpless music fans?

Yeh its a shame isn't it. Become promoters! Pour your energy into reviving the shit out of it!

We’ve got a feeling that 2015 is going to be a big year for AFTPC, what should we be looking out for?

Awww cheers guys :-) we have the B-Side sort thing (if they still exist?!) to 'This May Hurt' called 'Instincts' to release and then two more singles and then another EP that we are finishing at the moment. We are really excited to be playing at the Looe Music Festival and a few other dates over the summer whilst we finish recording.

J Mascis and Kim Gordon Share New Song

Kim Gordon and J Mascis have collaborated on a new song, titled 'Slow Boy'.

The track is taken from a new compilation curated by shoe brand Converse, called 'CONS EP Vol. 3'. The record also features a song from Freddie Gibbs and Hanni El Khatib, while more tracks are expected to be revealed throughout the month.

Bloc Party have updated fans with video of the band recording their next album in the studio.

The band's frontman Kele Okereke revealed in March that the London outfit have "started recording" their next LP, despite bassist Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong recently parting ways with the group.

This is great news for Bloc Party fans (and that definitely includes us). Here are our favourite BP songs to celebrate.

Apple launches its own streaming service

Apple has teamed up with rap superstars Drake and Pharrell to launch a music streaming service designed to compete with Spotify at its annual developers conference in San Francisco.

Apple’s new service is expected to sit alongside its existing iTunes music download store, charging users £10 in the UK or $10 in the US for a monthly subscription for unlimited access to its vast catalogue of music.

Sure, Spotify will take a big hit from this (the CEO responded with a tweet simply saying “Oh OK.”) but Tidal may as well cut its losses and call it a day.

Braids unveil 'Miniskirt' video

Braids have unveiled a new video for their track 'Miniskirt.

Speaking about the video in a statement, Kevin Funk (the director) revealed that the band came to him with very precise visual ideas: "I remember the first time I heard the song, I was simply kind of awestruck by the gravitational power that it seemed to [be] imbued with and its bold, incendiary beauty," he said. "It's a rare sort of source material to get the opportunity to work with. I wanted to create something that could compliment the track as opposed to trying to compete with its power.

"When thinking about the song and its content, I began very interested in the idea of commodification and control of femininity in a patriarchal societal construct, and liberation from that restraint. A central consideration that emerged from that was a historical relationship to nature, in terms of the patriarchal and imperial societal impulse to control, conform and dominate. That dynamic and the song's authorial resistance to that entitlement is what ultimately formed the thematic core of the video."
