Hunger's latest single 'Amused' - dark, cinematic, alt-rock/ synth-pop

Hailing from the idyllic suburbs of Vienna, HUNGER first formed in early 2014. Childhood friends Daniel Rumpel and Johannes Herbst approached long-term fellow and vocalist Lucas Fendrich with the intention of creating a truly dark and cinematic sound.

Once they’d developed a batch of demos, the three musicians headed to the outskirts of Vienna, built up a studio in a borrowed apartment and brought their sound to life.

Standard song structures and melodies were disregarded in favor of the tone and evocation of the music and their perspectives shifted when the band went into studio with British producer Dan Weller. Throughout the album, Fendrich, Rumpel, and Herbst channel big emotion into a moody but melodic blend of alt-rock and synth-pop, resulting in a vast, dark, cinematic sound – and the formation of HUNGER. The EP expands on their deeply visual sensibilities by delivering a gorgeously gritty video for ‘Gravity’ made in collaboration with Christian Lamb (an acclaimed director known for his work with artists like Coldplay, Bob Dylan, Madonna, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna).

‘Amused’ is a track cut with dark, devastating complexity. Impassioned vocals ensconced in ritualistic percussion, ‘Amused’ is the result of three musicians deeply committed to going exactly where their sound takes them.

Speaking of the track, HUNGER says: “'Amused' describes the very first moments of love when meeting someone who just makes you forget the world around of you. Everyone knows that feeling and tension, making you wanna break out and feel alive. When writing the song we tried to wrap all our personal and individual stories into one, both in the lyrics and in sound. Amused is kind of mysterious and upbeat at the same time – exactly how we experience that particular feeling.”

The band is currently back in the studio working on their forthcoming album.

New Portals release folk/electronica blend 'Golden Hour' EP

Belfast duo New Portals have released their brand new EP Golden Hour. The four track EP features new single ‘Chasing Shade’ and the recently released song ‘Sober’.

‘Chasing Shade’ is a moving ballad from New Portals, with reverberating pianos and a solemn drum roll laying the foundations for the pair’s beautiful harmonies.

The new single premiered with The Line Of Best Fit who said, “‘Chasing Shade’ is certainly a classy cut worthy of everyone’s attention.”

Regarding the new single New Portals say, “‘Chasing Shade’ is a song we wrote about that one person we all know who is just happy with their lives no matter what happens. We’re off busying ourselves, trying to make the world a better place or build a better or more fulfilling future for ourselves and some people are just happy to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. This song is about how envious we are of those people and how we wish we could just get away from the compulsions that drive us.”

‘Sober’ takes things on a more electronic tip, with delicate synths paired with a 4/4 beat, while the Golden Hour EP also features the lush lounging indie of ‘Do It Right’ and the mellow R&B-tinged ‘Locked Down’.

On the Golden Hour EP the band say, “This is our most honest and delicate release to date. We’ve tackled issues that aren’t necessarily in vogue. Discontent, sobriety, dissatisfaction. Production on the Golden Hour EP turned out differently from what we had envisioned. We booked studio time to make a simple acoustic record but couldn’t get away from adding in some synths and vibey electric guitar, so we just went with it. The EP ended up as a blend between folk and electronica.”

The Golden Hour EP follows the release of the band’s debut EP Stereo earlier this year, which was met with great acclaim from the likes of the Metro, The Guardian, Dork Magazine, Line Of Best Fit, Missguided, Pretty 52, 1883, Galore, Pop Dust and many more.

New Portals have also received strong support from BBC Radio 1, with Phil Taggart and Huw Stephens particularly big champions of the band at the station. They’ve been featured in a host of high profile Spotify playlists and receive regular in-store rotation at a number of leading UK high street brands too.

The band have also been developing increasing transatlantic appeal, having completed their first US tour last year and playing a number of shows at SXSW 2017. It illustrates the fact that New Portals are one of the most exciting musical exports coming from Ireland today.

New Portals will be playing live in London at The Crowndale, Camden on November 10th. Tickets are available now through SeeTickets.

Astrovoyager journeys into the cosmos on 'Architect'

Born in Metz and based in Dole, eastern France since 2011, music has been Philippe Fagnoni’s passion from a young age. Philippe was part of various bands until starting his own distinctive project, AstroVoyager, where he sought out to explore the boundaries within electro-symphonic music.

AstroVoyager gradually weaves electronic synthesizers and keyboards with instruments from a full orchestra to create an electronic symphony. Complemented by an extraordinary live performance, AstroVoyager’s ultimate goal is to completely immerse the listener in the music and visuals taking them on a cosmic journey.

‘Architect’ indeed lives up to this notion - sit back, relax, and enjoy the view of the milky way galaxy seated right on the edge of Saturn’s rings. Distanced, cold pianos sit atop deep, rich bass synthesizers, leading ‘Architect’ straight into the void as Taïga’s delicate vocal work together with concise percussion and drum programming fills the air with hope, reminding us that we are in fact the architects of the future.

A release party for the album Big Bang is scheduled for October 26th at Le Triton in Paris, France. On October 31st, exclusive collector items to accompany the forthcoming album Big Bang will also be available to purchase through Pledge Music.

Øfdream releases Anthology pt.1 through The Playground Records

Electronic producer Øfdream has recently released Anthology pt.1 through The Playground Records. The French wave producer has shared stages with the likes of Vitalic, Com Truise and Lorn and has already amassed over 3 million plays on his prior work.

Øfdream’s forays into production began with early experiments in progressive house. Dabbling in hip-hop and creating new sounds and textures, his sound began to take shape akin to garage, dark-melodious trap and heavy alternative electronic inspired music by which he was influenced. The result is a remarkable body of work which showcase his forward thinking production skills. “I am really happy with the release of “Anthology”. I worked hard on the different atmospheres and space of this EP, and hope it takes your mind on a trip” he says.

Tracks such as ‘Thelema’ and ‘Fallen Angel’ paint a vibrant picture of glacial landscapes amidst gleaming, shimmering desert sands. Øfdream channels these fantasies into a spellbinding actuality of vivid and lush textures by creating deep, provocative atmospheres and hooks.

Jilk releases ‘Become the Build’ as part of latest album “Joy In the End”

Jilk’s most collaborative effort as a collective to date, Joy in the End has landed. As part of promoting the LP that was released on September 1st via Project Mooncircle, they have shared the single ‘Become the Build’.

The influences and styles of the LP are eclectic; strings, guitars, synths, brass, voice, percussion, noise, concrète and glitch meet to create an overwhelmingly alluring set of compositions. Delicate electronic textures frame neo-classical arrangements while heart-wrenching vocals and guttural bass lines drive the album forward through 11 tracks of folktronic, drone based walls of sound.

“We’re so happy with this as a release because it's so personal. We made it in our homes, recorded it, produced it, mixed it. Many hours of furrowed brows and tired ears. It has something from all us in there and is truly a document of what you can do with a lot of heart and not much money.” say Jilk about the forthcoming album.

Their album launch is set for 15 September at ‘The Cube.’ Listen to 'Become The Build' and buy here.

Palence to release 'Telophase' via The Playground Records - shares first single 'Scarp'

Recording artist and soundscape composer Savanh Phaophanit aka PALENCE  is releasing his new EP Telophase on the 1st September via THE PLAYGROUND Records.

Annexing musical elements from a plethora of genres including Ambient, Post-Rock, IDM and 90s Hip Hop, Palence is also inspired by post-rock and slowcore melodies, drawing influence from the likes of Explosions In The Sky and Low, as well as artists such as Aphex Twin, Duster, Bluetile Lounge and drip-133.

The first track to be lifted from the upcoming album is 'Scarp.' Rich and deeply textured, the track's energy lies in its moody atmosphere.

His unorthodox methods for creating the album involved using an assortment of found objects for the percussive elements, alongside a vintage Tandberg 4000X reel to reel player, which was a gift from his grandfather. The result is a unique and personalised set of textures and timbres to used as tools for producing. Running his 1981 Gibson ES-335 through his reel to reel and splicing individual notes into short stabs, he recycled the noises and drenched them with reverb to create bespoke atmospheric synth-like sounds.  Incorporating Lo-fi ambience, meticulously tweaked drum patterns and an array of customised synths the sound is reminiscent of Boards of Canada’s warm analogue compositions.

Synthposium festival of music technology opens in Moscow 24–27 August

Russia has been at the forefront of electronic music since the very beginning, and synthesisers were developed and widely used in the former Soviet Union – both officially and underground. Ninety years ago, a young Russian scientist and inventor, Leon Theremin, was summoned to the Kremlin for a meeting with Lenin. This was the start of an incredible journey that laid the foundations for modern electronic music. Robert Moog wrote that Theremin was a ''vital cornerstone of our contemporary music technology''. In 1972, Eduard Artemiev, one of first electronic music composers in the Soviet Union, created a remarkable score for Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris which ultimately proved as influential as the film itself. It was composed using the massive photoelectron ANS synthesiser, created by Russian engineer Yevgeny Murzin in 1952.

Since then things have changed dramatically. When it comes to burgeoning electronic music scenes, Moscow isn't usually one of the first cities that springs to mind, but Synthposium is on a mission to change that. Synthposium is an annual Moscow-based festival exploring a new interdisciplinary culture formed at the junction of electronic music and technology.

For the last three years, Synthposium has united and inspired professional producers and musicians, fans of analogue and modular synthesisers, engineers and experts on musical instruments. Today the festival’s reach goes beyond a narrowly specialised community to become a major urban event set to provide a unique interactive platform for demonstrating new thought in engineering, digital design, business projects and the results of creative inquiry across different areas. The aftermath of previous editions of the project has seen growing audience interest and the potential for the local market to become, in the near future, one of the most creative and fast-paced in the world.

This year the extended four-day format for Synthposium will include an exhibition of achievements in music technology and an educational programme dedicated to lectures, public talks and workshops led by international and local experts and engineers including BBC broadcaster Matthew Sweet and synth enthusiast Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe aka Lichens. Following the tradition of Russian engineering innovations in music, Synthposium will hold an offline premiere of Deckard's Dream, designed by Russian engineer Roman Filippov (Sputnik Modular). The 8-voice polyphonic analogue synthesiser is inspired by a certain sound in late 1970s and early 1980s cinema, most recognisable in Vangelis’s score for Blade Runner.

A parallel awards ceremony will take place for the first time at Synthposium, awarding prizes to the best engineering, the best interface designs and concepts, and artists with the most technologically advanced live shows – all for the first time in Russia. The festival will also host interactive installations and audiovisual performances. An evening programme will include three afterparties at popular clubbing venues in Moscow, with international artists and famous local musicians among the headliners – get ready for shoegaze disciple Ulrich Schnauss and German techno legend Thomas P. Heckmann.

Artists and speakers: Max Cooper, Richard Devine, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Baseck, London Modular, Tatsuya Takahashi, Solar X, Jacek Sienkiewicz, Ulrich Shnauss, Matthew Sweet, Denis Kaznacheev, Interchain, PTU, Tripmastaz, Rhizome aka Nikita Zabelin, Lapti, Vtgnike and many more.

Expo participants: Deckard’s Dream, Polivoks, MDR.modular, Playtronica, Erica Synths, Sputnik Modular, VG-Line, L-1 Synthesizer, Pribore Electronics, DNGR:TECH, Svarog Audio, Uoki-Toki, TipTop Audio, SSSR Labs and many more.

The Synthposium team will showcase a collaboration of Russian music industry activists initiated by the Main In Main communications agency.

Drowned is the new EP by CHVRN - released through The Playground Records

CHVRN has just released his latest EP Drowned, via The Playground Records.

The Russian electronic producer derived his name from Charn, the city in C. S Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. The sound of CHVRN has roots in 80’s new wave and synth, but  is inspired by a variety of genres: modern wave, post rock and witch house.

CHVRN became interested in music when he acquired his first guitar ten years ago. In 2011 he started the 8bit/chiptune project “Reboot Me” and has since garnered over 6 million Youtube views, shared stages with the likes of Dita Redrum, Gnothi Seauton. He has shared the stage with the likes of  IC3PEAK and has collaborated with Polish wave producer MYSTXRIVL. His remixes include tracks for a string of USA artists including Aesthetic Perfection and GenCAB.

He is actively involved in Russia’s witch house scene, an occult-themed dark electronic music microgenre and visual aesthetic that emerged in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and has become infamous for underground raves and wave music parties, especially in Russia over the past several years.

The EP has a strong atmospheric sound, combined with spatterings of modern hip-hop and EDM rhythms.

Says CHVRN, “This EP marks a final step in my journey since my first release. It’s the endpoint of a chapter which has seen me research the new edges of my sound. Just dreamy vibes, secret thoughts and embracing the spirit of my city.”

EP Tracklist:
01. Secrets
02. Mirror Fields
03. Tell Me
04. Melancholy
05. Lost

Zola Jesus announces new album + tour dates

Zola Jesus has announced the release of Okavi, set to drop on September 8th via Sacred Bones records.

The album is inspired by deep personal tragedy, and explores themes of loss and reconciliation. Written in pure catharsis, the sonics have been described as heavy, dark, and exploratory.

Best described by the artist herself, she had this to say of the album: “Last year, I moved back to the woods in Wisconsin where I was raised. I built a little house just steps away from where my dilapidated childhood tree fort is slowly recombining into earth. Okovi was fed by this return to roots and several very personal traumas.
While writing Okovi, I endured people very close to me trying to die, and others trying desperately not to. Meanwhile, I was fighting through a haze so thick I wasn’t sure I’d find my way to the other side. Death, in all of its masks, has been encircling everyone I love, and with it the questions of legacy, worth, and will.”

She has also announced a rigorous tour schedule, which kicks off in New York and concludes in London. Scroll down for dates.

Dave Pad remixes Sex Of Insects' 'I Can Hear The Light'

Sex of Insects have shared the Dave Pad remix of their track ‘I Can Hear The Light’ ahead of the release of the full remix album tomorrow via Ylotana Music.

The original track is a complete improvisation of guitar sounds and vocals mixed with some vibrant electronic grooves, with an almost complete absence of synthesisers. Russian-based Dave Pad’s remix moves the track  onto the dancefloor with an incredibly funky, groovy-laiden back beat, while simultaneously holding onto the original tracks esthetical ambience. Euphoric house stabs and a continuous layered texture sits behind the tracks groove, adding a sense of nostalgia and depth to an already emotive original.

Fejká Shares Single 'Twilight (ft. Hildur)’ from Exciting New Debut EP

“Captivated by the atmospheric vibe and the calm of ambient music, as well as the state of absolute ecstasy that provokes the powerful beat of techno, this artist decided to explore the perfect balance between both.”
THUMP

Fejká has just shared 'Twilight (ft. Hildur)’ from his debut EP Twilight via Christian Löffler’s label which will be released via Ki Records on 14 July.

The EP has an interesting concept. Torn between a love for soft ambient sounds, and hard punchy techno, Fejká produced an album that embodies both. The EP’s first two songs, Illumination and ‘Sunlight’ are dreamy downtempo tracks. The album concludes with ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Ghostlight (ft. Marie Angerer)’ which embody Fejká’s love for the harder “harder stuff.” Bridging the gap between the two genres is the title track of the album ‘Twilight (ft. Hildur)’

Fejká says of the track: “My personal favourite, “Twilight (ft. Hildur)”,  is a unique and rare combination of both worlds and really important for me because it perfectly describes my musical taste. It took me a long time to finish something like this, but I'm very happy to have found that one song, which combines everything to an absolute purity of musical perception.”.

Romare Releases 'Come Close To Me (Live Session 1)'

"Precisely the sort of confounding of expectations we love to hear, and bodes well for a long,
interesting career"
Mixmag

Romare’s ‘Come Close To Me (Live Session 1)’ is a live edit of the single taken from his 2016 LP Love Songs: Part Two. Along with the track is an 80’s inspired music video a Mazda speeding off into a fading sunset. “From our first phone call discussing the concept for ‘Come Closer’ [Come Close To Me’ Ed]", says director Greg Barnes “Archie (Romare) and I were on the same page. We both wanted to push the limits of what a performance-based, session style video could be, and it was clear that meant smoke, lasers, and his Mazda.”

The single and video were released on the 27th June 2017 (premiered via Crack) on Ninja Tune.  Just in time as Romare prepares for his upcoming headline show at KOKO on 11th November 2017.This will be his biggest and, surely, most impressive performance to date which will see him showcase his disco beats with a live band as well as DJ sets by Romare himself and a string of other companions late into the night.

Andrew Applepie + Bjurman Triumph With New Track 'Drowning World'

Andrew Applepie, an upcoming German electronic artist, loves producing music, and creates songs with everything he gets his hands on. He uses various instruments, from recorders, guitars and drum machines, to weird and wonderful pieces he’s picked up while traveling, even kitchen utensils have featured on some of his tracks. Andrew’s sound is uniqueunique and uses organic, everyday sounds using field recording. New York film-maker Casey Neistat and many more are playing his tunes in their videos and millions of people around the world are listening.
Drawing influence from modern electronic artists like Caribou and Baths as well as classic beatmakers like RJD2 and bands such as Gorillaz, Andrew is also draws influence from alternative/independent artists like Deerhunter.  Although some of his songs appear to have the feel and structure of sampled hip hop beats, he only uses parts he has played or recorded himself. Andrew has just released a single with  Sandra Bjurman titled “Drowning World” blending  the Swedish singer's raw and melancholic vocal performance with his upbeat and playful style. This combines the yin and yang of pop music into an incredibly emotional and appealing tune, starting out fragile and vulnerable, making you smile through a warped ukulele riff and leaving you with goosebumps when the chorus drops.

When asked about the track, he says: “Before we even ever talked or met up I got to hear her song "Drowning World" and I immediately felt drawn to it. I loved the melody and the song was great. I felt I could really contribute something to it. So we met up, and then I took our material with me to Maui where I made it into a new song with a new chorus and some spicy ukulele licks with my new uke I got in Kahului. Surprisingly enough everybody loved the tune!”

Other notable releases include his original track Krazy, his bootleg remix of Skrillex & Rick Ross’s Purple Lamborghini, and his recent collab with Lucchii “Blow Up.” In addition to having his track “El3phat” featured in Showtek’s Yearmix 2016, his music is consistently supported by major artists and included in podcasts and live sets from MAKJ, Juicy M, Chainsmokers, Chuckie, Reece Low, Glowinthedark, Dada Life, Milk N Cooks, Far Too Loud, DJ Bl3nd, and more.

His time spent in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Seoul being an international flavor to his performance.

The “wubs, hoo’s, beats and peaks” of his songs are insane, a result of over ten year of experience in breakdancing, guitar, and drums. A DJ with an unsurpassable rhythmical sense, eclectic taste, and knowledge of contemporary music history, we chatted to Tha Boogie Bandit about his music, producing, and the way forward…

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
Feeling good - sun is warm, grass is green, what more could you ask for? Today I'm gonna get back to working on a track that I have gone through three different versions of for the past 4 months and finally finish it up.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
Eclectic hybrid fusion catchy bass dance music with a touch of the feels. I like combining genres to try and make something new and fresh, like putting together drum and bass and reggae, funk and bass house, or future bass and hybrid trap.

What are the 5 albums that have influenced you the most?
The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land, Skrillex - Recess, RL Grime - Void, Linkin Park - Meteora, Above & Beyond - Group Therapy

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?
I listen to everything from Kendrick Lamar to Getz and Gilberto (the Bossanova dudes) and try and take influences from all over. Dance music wise, I've recently been listening to a mix of Brohug, Herobust, Moksi, and Boombox Cartel. They're super consistent - every track I hear from them is pure fire. To make every track you release a banger AND something new and fresh, that is really, really, really hard to do. The biggest influences in dance music  will occasionally release a dud every now and then but to be that consistent makes me have mad respect for them.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you are using to define your sound?
I'm not really a gearhead, but if craft beer counts as a piece of equipment, it is definitely essential to my song-writing process. That and my French Bulldog puppy.

What would you say some of the challenges artists face today in the music industry?
I think a big challenge is how saturated the music industry has become. It's great that more people are being creative and trying to write and release music, but with so much music out there, it can be tough to be heard. Another tough thing is that artists can have a pretty negative "why should I work with you, what will you do for me?" kind of attitude where everything somehow has to be "me me me". I know it might sound a bit naive, but I want to be making connections, doing collaborations, and building a community without having to think about how this benefits me or you. I sometimes fall into that trap as well, but being nice and genuine goes a long way and I have been trying to approach the community in that way.

Where do you gather songwriting inspiration?
I listen to the big mixes like Diplo & Friends, but I find that I get the most inspiration and creative ideas when I listen to stuff I barely know. The other day I was at XLII's studio here in Tokyo (he's part of XXX$$$) and we were listening to some hardcore dancehall. I didn't leave the studio session thinking "oh yeah I am gonna make some dance hall now", but I did leave with tons of inspiration, new ideas, and ways to think about what different beats do to how people react and move their bodies.

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting your music together?
Whenever I sit down and force myself to start writing a new song, it never goes well. I have to constantly be thinking about music away from the studio throughout the day to find that spark of an idea. Once I get that initial idea, I hit the studio, crack open a Lagunitas IPA and before I know it I have the basic structure of the song put together in only a few days. All of the little details are what take the longest - I can spend weeks to months fine tuning tracks or even restarting the entire project.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?
The best gig I have ever done was in the summer of 2011. I was still relatively new to DJ-ing at the time and it was actually my first gig in Tokyo. My old DJ partner Foxx Boogie was in Japan and we played at this huge crazy all day beach party, with a tuna slicing show, barbecue, unlimited booze for 10 hours, thousands of half-naked party-goers, and my closest friends. Honestly the best part about it was the memories with my closest friends. Friends are really important to me so being able to spend big moments together like those tend to make for memories that I will keep for a lifetime.

And the worst?
I'd like to think they were all pretty good.

If you weren't a musician what would you be?
Probably a strategy consultant. Or I would open my own taco shop, and call it Taco Betty (my grandma's name is Betty).

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I recently launched a sub-label under Peak Hour Music called "Hotslice." We focus on bass music and have had about 7 releases so far, with several more locked down for release in the future. I'm also close to finishing up the material for my first EP, which I hope to release later this year.
